Malcolm Gladwell, The Box Set
Opportunity
Malcolm Gladwell, whose observations on our society have made him an iconic voice, and his publisher, Hachette Audio, wanted to release a definitive collection of his works on audio. The Tipping Point, Blink and Outliers were to be a set of three audio books. The package had to organize the 22 discs in a user-friendly and space-efficient way while delivering a prestigious look and feel for collectors.
Solution
The stakeholders wanted the package to convey heft without being cumbersome. Each book in its entirety is offered in a gatefold-style disc folder, with the three folders housed in a full-telescoping, rigid, two-piece slipcase. The author’s desire for simplicity in presentation and the use of the original graphics for each book called for decorative nuance. The use of matte-and-gloss contrast was implemented with spot gloss of the title type on the outer slipcase; an overall gloss on the interior slipcase highlights the matte finish of the exterior slipcase and interior disc folders. The V-notched area on the exterior slipcase is aesthetically pleasing and makes it easy to open the case. Additionally, the cut back of the interior slipcase exposes the spines of the disc folders for quick identification and accessibility.
Result
Solid yet subtle, the package’s design execution and straightforward functionality delighted both author and publisher, and is appropriate to the importance of the author’s work on society.
