Oscilloscope DVD Wallets

Opportunity

In 2008, Adam Yauch, known to music fans worldwide as MCA of the Beastie Boys, launched Oscilloscope Laboratories, to produce and distribute independent films with the same commitment to individuality and integrity as the pictures themselves. As outspoken supporters of environmental causes, Adam and his team wanted to bring the same high values to the packaging of their releases by maximizing the sustainability and minimizing the carbon footprint of their format. And in keeping with the tradition of many of the great indie record labels, their packaging had to encourage collectability, and each title had to be recognizable as Oscilloscope at first glance. They called on Tri-Plex to make their vision a reality.

Solution

With its plastic-free, fully recyclable construction and extensive graphics potential, as well as a solid retail footprint that delivers shelf presence, Tri-Plex’s DVD Wallet was clearly the way to go. Oscilloscope chose to use a 4-panel construction so they could present their panoramic artwork uninterrupted by the visual clutter of plastic. The extensive graphic area of the wallet also eliminated the need for a booklet. They chose the paper with the highest percentage of post-consumer waste (80%) available, a fully uncoated sheet that adds a distinctive finish and feel. The final touch is the gray-scale Oscilloscope Laboratories logo running across the spines of the first 52 titles— a tight registration challenge that Tri-Plex’s production team achieved by running the shades of gray as a second black for maximum control on press.

Result

Unique packaging that delivers content and ensures brand identity. Oscilloscope’s releases (including Wendy and Lucy, on many film critic’s 2008 top-ten lists) stand out at retail, are drawing media attention, and are proving a factor in attracting filmmakers to Oscilloscope as the right home for their work.
